The Model Energy Code
The Model Energy Code (MEC) was last published in 1995 by the
Council of American Building Officials (CABO). Colorado jurisdictions
adopting energy codes prior to 1998 would likely have adopted
the MEC. However, further updates are not forthcoming as the
three organizations that created the MEC under the auspices
of CABO have now consolidated to form a single organization.
These organizations are: Building Officials and Code Administrators
International, Inc. (BOCA),
the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO),
and the Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc.
(SBCCI). The new consolidated
organization is called the International Code Council (ICC)
and, in 1998, produced new, updated energy codes. Now, jurisdictions
desiring to adopt or update their energy codes for one- and
two-family dwellings typically enact the International Residential
Code (IRC) and/or the International Energy Conservation Code
(IECC). Both the IRC and IECC are kept current and have been
revised as recently as early 2003.
