The Status of Energy Codes in Colorado

Colorado is a home rule state so energy codes in Colorado vary by local jurisdiction. There is no statewide energy code. However, an energy code enacted by a Colorado municipality or county may be in effect. Many energy-efficiency oriented organizations recommend the adoption of the International Residential Code (IRC) or the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Adoption of one or both of these progressive energy codes is now the trend among Colorado jurisdictions, although some areas may have the older Model Energy Code (MEC) in place.
