Estimating Average Annual Heating Cost

The following calculation is designed to assist you in estimating your average annual heating cost.  The calculation is simplified, but it will give you a good ballpark figure.

For this calculation you will need:

  • One full year of past heating fuel bills (for example: July 2002- June 2003)

Throughout the form below you will find links to supportive information you may need to help you complete the calculation. Use your Back button to return to the form.

Annual Units of Heating Fuel Consumed:
Take your July 1998 - June 1999 fuel bills and add up the total units.  For Natural Gas that would be Therms or CCF; for Propane or Fuel Oil this would be gallons; for Electricity it would be Kwh.

Average of June, July & August Consumption:
Your monthly heating bills may also include water heating, a gas dryer, or a gas stove energy usage.  To remove these units from the calculation, average the units of consumption during the three summer months and enter the average here.  This average will be multiplied times 12 and subtracted from the above total annual units.
Heating Fuel Cost/Unit (enter amount in dollars):
Take a recent heating bill and divide total cost by units of heating fuel consumed.  If you know of a standard monthly charge, remove that from the total first.
Average Heating Degree Days for Your Location:
Heating Degree Days are a common measure of severity of heating climate.  You will find the average (season norm) heating degree days for your location on the accompanying table.
Actual Heating Degree Days for Your Location:
Heating Degree Days are a common measure of severity of heating climate.  You will find the actual heating degree days for your location for the 1998-99 and 1997-98 heating seasons on the accompanying table.
